Dr. Christopher William Wijekoon Kannangara, commonly known as C.W.W. Kannangara, was a prominent Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. Born on October 13, 1884, in Hikkaduwa, he played a pivotal role in shaping Sri Lanka’s education system and is often referred to as the “Father of Free Education” in the country.

Kannangara’s early education at the Wesleyan Missionary School in Ambalangoda and Richmond College in Galle laid the foundation for his academic and professional success. He initially worked as a mathematics teacher before pursuing a career in law. His legal career was marked by his defense of detainees during the 1915 riots, which earned him recognition and respect.

In 1931, Kannangara became the first Minister of Education in the State Council of Ceylon. During his tenure, he introduced significant reforms that made education accessible to children from all social backgrounds. His efforts led to the establishment of central colleges across the country, providing free education and scholarships to deserving students.

Kannangara’s contributions extended beyond education. He was actively involved in Sri Lanka’s independence movement and held various political positions, including President of the Ceylon National Congress and Member of Parliament. He passed away on September 23, 1969, leaving behind a legacy of educational reform and social justice.
