Galahitiyawa Central College, nestled in the heart of Ganemulla in the Gampaha District, is a distinguished educational institution in Sri Lanka, renowned for its rich history and commitment to academic excellence. It stands as one of the original 54 central schools established by the pioneering education reformer C.W.W. Kannangara, under his ambitious free education policy. The school opened its doors on May 1, 1944, with an initial cohort of 60 students and three teachers, under the leadership of the first principal, Mr. Silva. The early years of the school were marked by humble beginnings, with limited facilities and resources.

Initially, the school lacked laboratory facilities, and the curriculum was restricted to basic subjects such as history, English, and mathematics. In place of traditional textbooks, students used stone tablets, reflecting the resourcefulness of the institution during its formative years . Despite these challenges, Galahitiyawa Central College rapidly expanded. By 1946, the school had begun to offer a broader range of subjects, including Eastern music, carpentry, weaving, and Kandyan dancing, which enriched the cultural education of the students. A significant development during this period was the establishment of a hostel for female students on February 17, 1946, providing accommodation and fostering a conducive learning environment . The introduction of the inter-house system in 1947, with the houses named Gemunu, Tissa, Vijaya, and Parakram, added a competitive spirit to the school's culture. The first inter-house sports festival, held in 1949, became a cornerstone event, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship among students . The school's infrastructure also saw substantial improvements. In 1948, a comprehensive building complex was completed, offering students a range of modern facilities. By 1955, the school had further expanded its amenities, including a dedicated hostel, a staff room for teachers, a dining hall, and a kitchen for the hostel students, catering to the growing student population and enhancing the overall educational experience .

Today, Galahitiyawa Central College continues to uphold its legacy of excellence. It provides education from grades 6 to 13, with classes conducted in both Sinhala and English. The school admits students based on their performance in the Scholarship Examination, maintaining a high academic standard. The curriculum has evolved to include a wide range of subjects, supported by well-equipped laboratories, libraries, and other facilities. In 2024, Galahitiyawa Central College celebrated its 80th anniversary, a testament to its enduring legacy. The anniversary was marked with various celebratory events, including an all-night Pirith chanting ceremony and a Sanghika Dana (almsgiving), highlighting the community's dedication to the school's success. This milestone celebration also served as an opportunity to honor the contributions of past principals, teachers, students, and parents who have shaped the school's history
